Linden trees comprise a number of species which all belong to the genus Tilia. They are large, deciduous trees which are very widespread and are predominantly now used for ornamental purposes. They are important honey plants for beekeepers and their flowers are important in herbal medicine. Particularly in Greece, tea prepared from the dried flowers is popular as a relaxant. Linden also has antispasmodic action and can help in cases of an upset stomach or excessive gas.
The major active constituents in linden are flavonoids and glycosides. which are thought to aid in the relief of respiratory problems by reducing or loosening mucus, to cause sweating in order to help regulate body temperature, to aid in the reduction of nervous tension, to lowers blood pressure in some cases, to block the cough reflex and to aid in the relief of pain, high temperatures, and swelling.
