A fishing boat overloaded with hundreds of migrants has sunk to the bottom of one of the deepest parts of the Mediterranean Sea in international waters to the west of the Peloponnese. About 100 on the boat were rescued but many, including perhaps 100 children, are feared trapped in the hold of the boat whose recovery seems to be extremely unlikely. According to reports, the boat was on its way from Egypt to Italy when it got into difficulties. There are conflicting reports concerning actual events that took place but it is one the worst incidents in recent years and already in 2023, 1000 lives have been lost in this part of the Mediterranean which is now one of the more popular routes from North Africa to Europe since the introduction of increasingly stringent and controversial measures to restrict migration from Turkey to Greece.
