Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a perennial plant used primarily in cooking and for its aromatic properties which resemble those of Dill and Anise. The seeds of the plant and the oil have been used to relieve various digestive problems including heartburn, intestinal gas, bloating, loss of appetite, and colic in infants.

A number of health benefits have been claimed for fennel products but there is no firm evidence for most of these. The main benefit of the plant would appear to be based on its nutritional value as a source of fiber, potassium, vitamins A and C and a range of potential antioxidants including polyphenols and terpenoids.
