Origanum vulgare is native to the Mediterranean region. A related species Origanum onites is also common in Greece and has similar properties. Apart from the well know culinary uses of the dried herb, particularly in the cuisine of Mediterranean countries, oregano also has many rather well-documented medicinal properties.
It is considered to be beneficial in the treatment of colds, stomach upsets and dysmenorrhea. It has found use in external applications such as for bronchitis, arthritis and muscular pain. Oregano oil is often mentioned in traditional herbal remedies although, like many other similar substances, care needs to be taken to avoid excess dosage. It has bee recommended to ease toothache and has antiseptic properties. The oil is also used in perfumery and as an insect repellent.
Like other related herbs, oregano contains numerous polyphenols and flavones, as well as a wide range of terpenes and terpenoids which contribute to its characteristic flavour.
